Bob Vogelbaugh is organizing a third, drive-through turkey dinner. A year ago, with the help of Hy-Vee, MetroLink, and SouthPark Mall, he served 3,400 people. The first drive-through dinner was in 2020 because of the pandemic. He started the Thanksgiving community dinner in 1970.
Connie McElyea from SouthPark Mall in Moline says the company fully supports Vogelbaugh and his community dinner. But a sit-down meal inside just wasn't possible.
HyVee planned ahead to make sure enough turkey, mashed potatoes, and all the traditional dishes will be available. Employees of the grocery store will do all the work, so no volunteers will be needed.
Costs have gone up, and Vogelbaugh relies on donations to pay for the meals. You can support the dinner by mailing a check to Mr. Thanksgiving, 3704 26th Street, Moline, 61265. Or donate at any local Hy-Vee store.
Anyone can come by the mall and pick up a free Thanksgiving meal on Thursday the 24th from 4 to 6 PM.
Those who don't have transportation should call Metrolink by noon on Monday, November 21st, to reserve a ride. The number is 309.788.3360.
