Red Kettle Campaign Kickoff

A sure sign of the upcoming holidays is now visible throughout the Quad Cities. Friday afternoon, the Salvation Army kicked off this year's Red Kettle campaign with a ceremony at the Hy-Vee store in Milan.

Quad Cities Coordinator, Major Bob Doliber, says the goal is 750,000 dollars - a 15 per cent increase over last year's goal of 650,000.

"And we weren't sure with the pandemic and all the challenges of the pandemic if we'd be able to reach that. But the Quad Cities donors are very generous and we greatly surpassed that."

Each year, the Red Kettles and the Christmas campaign raise money to buy food and toys for needy families.

"We're seeing a lot more families this year, some that are new that we haven't seen before, people that are living from paycheck to paycheck, that just can't make ends meet. So this will help them get a meal on their table for Christmas and toys under the tree."

Money raised at Christmas also supports a variety of year-round programs, including food, shelter, and other help.

The Salvation Army's Red Kettles will be set up at more than 40 locations around the Quad Cities, through Christmas Eve. The overall Christmas campaign continues through the end of January.

After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
