Over the past two decades, the monarch butterfly population has declined by as much as 90 percent.

Organizations across Illinois are working to protect the monarch butterfly. The state DNR is trying to identify these groups and provide assistance.

To do this, Ann Holtrop, the chief of the Natural Heritage Division, says her department is hosting a 25-question online survey through June 17.

Over the past two decades, the monarch butterfly population has declined by as much as 90 percent in Illinois and across the country. Holtrop says her department wants to protect it from extinction.

The DNR will host a conservation meeting in Springfield in September to discuss how to continue and expand current efforts to restore monarch habitats.
