Last night around 7:45, firefighters responded to a call about 217 17th Street where bricks had been found on the sidewalk.

Fire Chief Robert Graff says a neighbor called to report bricks on the sidewalk that appeared to have fallen from the top of the building. The fire department called in the Rock Island Inspections Division to help assess it. City staff jointly determined the building is unsafe and ordered it evacuated. The owner, A. Hana Growers, LLC., has one week to conduct a structural assessment and plan for repairs.

Residents of three apartments were given Red Cross contact information and have places to stay. And the Rock Island Economic Development Department is ready to help the business on the ground floor.
