Talking Art with Amelia Bay

The freelance hairstylist, Amelia Bay, is originally from the Quad Cities and now works in television and on Broadway.  She was in the midst of filming for the TV show Law & Order:  Special Victims Unit when the entertainment industry was shuttered due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

We spoke with Amelia as she was quarantining in Michigan.  Listen to our conversation here about the intricacies of hair and wig design, the difference between hair styling for theatre and television, and how her early exposure to theatre at Pleasant Valley High School formed her desire to work on Broadway.

Amelia earned her bachelor’s degree in Wig and Makeup Design at the North Carolina School of the Arts. She feels that her greatest professional achievement thus far has been supervising hair for the Broadway run of Be More Chill.  You can follow Amelia Bay on Instagram.

Carolyn Martin joined WVIK as a host of Talking Art in 2017. A long-time fan of NPR programming with a love of storytelling and all art forms, she is thrilled to have the opportunity to speak with creative people who beautify our community and make the Quad Cities region an even better place to live.
