The state of Iowa wants to help Clinton Community College build a new Career Training center in DeWitt. This month the Iowa Department of Education approved a one million dollar grant for the project.
President Brian Kelly says the college already offers some career and technical training programs in Clinton and Maquoketa, but the new facility would help make more programs available to more people at all three locations. And he thinks there's an urgent need for these programs in our area.
"65 per cent of the jobs in this economy require some training and education beyond high school, and we know that especially in our rural areas up to 40 per cent of our high school graduates do not pursue any education or training beyond high school."
The state grant would pay for less than 20 per cent of the new center in DeWitt - it's up to residents of the Eastern Iowa Community Colleges district to approve the rest when they go to the polls next Tuesday (3/2) to vote on a 40 million dollar bond issue. It would pay for this and other projects.
The possible location in DeWitt is the Crossroads Industrial Park, and it would offer programs in agriculture, business, construction, health care, and information technology.
