Moline Tries to Control Geese

Wild Goose Chase

An expert may be hired to help the Moline Park Board clean up around the Ben Butterworth Parkway and Riverside Park. Thursday afternoon the board will consider hiring a company from Chicago called Wild Goose Chase to help solve its geese problem.

Park Operations Manager Greg Johnson says there are a lot of geese, and they leave a lot of droppings, and sometimes get out into traffic. So Wild Goose Chase is recommending Moline lease a specially-trained dog to chase the geese off the parkway and into the river.

"When the Wild Goose people came, they had a dog and we watched it work. It was phenomenal how the geese were afraid of the dog. And that's the problem on the parkway, there's no predators down there."

The company also recommends shining a laser at the geese, it won't hurt them, but should cause them to move away from the bike path and park.

Johnson says the park department might also plant bushes and tall grass around some shelters to keep the geese away - they don't like tall vegetation because they can't see predators approaching.
