"Let's move on. Let's protect. Let's serve." Those were the final words in a speech this afternoon from the new sheriff of Rock Island County. Gerald Bustos was sworn in at a ceremony, one day after the former county sheriff, Jeffrey Boyd, resigned.
Bustos, who's served the sheriff's department for thirty years, said he found out about the investigation into Sheriff Boyd a few weeks ago.
"This day comes with a heavy heart, so although it would be a celebration in other situations, today is not necessarily so much a celebration for me. But I do know we need to move on. What happened with Sheriff Boyd's resignation yesterday is not and should not be a reflection of the commitment we have to our citizens."
Boyd withdrew his candidacy for re-election in November as part of a plea deal on a misdemeanor charge of attempted official misconduct based on attempted cyberstalking.
Sheriff Bustos hasn't stated whether he will run for sheriff.
