For the next month, homeowners in Davenport can get a free smoke alarm from the Red Cross, and installed by the fire department.
Public Education Officer Lieutenant Zach Soliz says this is the third year the department has worked with the Red Cross on the program called Sound the Alarm. The reason is simple - smoke alarms save lives.
"By having a working smoke alarm for early notification - they can call us, dispatch tones us out, and what could have been a room and contents fire with a smoke alarm, could turn into a fully inovlved house or structure because of late notification. Smoke alarms are that important."
In addition, he recommends testing your smoke alarms each month, including testing the batteries, and make sure you have an escape plan and that all family members are familiar with it.
Sound the Alarm continues through May 8th.
