When the new school year begins, the Bettendorf schools will use a hybrid plan.
Superintendent Michelle Morris says students will spend full days in class, two days a week, plus alternate Wednesdays, and learn remotely at home the rest of the time. Or they can choose to do all of their learning online and at home.
"With this hybrid model we will meet the governor's guidance that students need to be in person a minimum of 50 per cent of the time."
Using the alphabet, students going to school will be split into two groups, with one group going to class Mondays and Thursdays, while the other will go to school on Tuesdays and Fridays. The two groups will take turns going to school on Wednesdays.
Doctor Morris says the school district is preparing to ask parents to choose between the hybrid model or 100 per cent at home - for the first quarter of the year which lasts until late October (10/22).
"As conditions either stabilize around test positivity rates and case counts for the virus - if they stabilize or continue to decline, we'll work with our state and local health officials to determine if we can increase that in-person time."
In school and on the bus, students will be required to wear masks. Fall sports will be held, but on a reduced schedule that's yet to be determined.
Bettendorf students will start the new year on August 24th.
