Hoping to save some money in the long run, the Bettendorf school board has approved an early retirement incentive.
Director of Finance, Brietta Collier, says it's being offered to school district employees who will be age 55 or older by next summer, and who will have worked for the district full-time for at least 15 years consecutively.
"There is a savings to the general fund for the district in terms of those replacement staff are not going to cost as much as your tenured staff."
The incentive is 15,000 dollars in cash, plus 60 dollars for each day of un-used sick leave. Collier says the average Bettendorf teacher has accumulated 280 days, so that would add another 16,000 dollars.
The deadline to sign up is the end of January.
Of the nearly 700 full and part time employees of the Bettendorf schools, 58 teachers, support staff, and administrators are eligible for this early retirement incentive.
