Talking Art with Jackie Dempsey

Ways To Subscribe

Presented by Quad City Arts, in sponsorship with the Downtown Davenport Partnership, the creative group Squonk will be performing their flamboyant show Hand to Hand August 19-21, 2022, as part of the Alternating Currents Festival.

Described by Times Out New York as a “blazingly unique spectacle,” this free show features two giant purple puppet hands the size of a house and rigged like a sailing ship, so that each hand can tilt and move about, and each finger can be controlled individually with ropes. A multi-tiered scaffolding between the enormous hands supports the band, members of which challenge each other by performing original musical compositions that loosely fit into the progressive rock genre.

Listen to the conversation here with Jackie Dempsey, co-Artistic Director of Squonk, about the “community of the imagination” they hope to inspire, the joy she feels watching people experience their shows for their first time, and the thirty-year journey Squonk has taken from their origins in Pittsburgh to performing for audiences around the world.

Don’t miss one of the free upcoming performances in the Skybridge parking lot in downtown Davenport, IA:

Friday, Aug 19, 2022: 6pm and 8:30pm

Saturday, Aug 20, 2022: 11:30am, 7pm and 10pm

Sunday, Aug 21, 2022: 1pm

Squonk brings audiences together for a “joyful celebration of humankind and our peculiar world.”
