I am Kristen Bergren with the QC Environmental Film Series. The QC Environmental Film Series is back for its 7th season in a new venue. We are looking forward to being at St. Ambrose’s Galvin Fine Arts Center theater in Davenport, Iowa! We have a super exciting film lineup, with some very special guest speakers!
Besides a new venue, we also have a new event which will be held in the Galvin lobby. Before each movie, we will host ENVIRO Connect from 2:00 to -3:00, an opportunity to have a chat with conservation and environmental groups as well as other partners whose mission aligns with the films we are showing. So come early and enjoy free popcorn and connect with enthusiastic and knowledgeable folks. The film will begin immediately afterwards, followed by a reflection speaker who will be able to answer questions and share their own personal stories.
Our first film is Out There: A National Park Story, showing on Sunday, January 18th. At Enviro Connect, you will have a chance to connect with folks from Black Hawk State Historic Site, Effigy Mounds National Monument, Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance and Sierra Club Eagle View Group. Also enjoy National Park displays and activities! Our film, Out There , showcases the stories of visitors and employees at America’s national parks and explores what these places mean to them. It’s a 10,000-mile journey that highlights the connection, healing, and stewardship within the parks. Featuring stunning cinematography, it celebrates the beauty of these landscapes and the people protecting them. The run time of the film is 75 minutes. After the movie , we are honored to welcome, Susan Snow, Superintendent of Effigy Mounds National Monument as our reflection speaker. This is a wonderful chance to hear from a dedicated national park ranger about the care of America’s Best Idea…our national parks.
Our next film is Out of Plain Sight, showing on Sunday, January 25th. We will once again host ENVIRO Connect from 2:00 to 3:00, featuring more local partners and displays curated to the theme of our film. Out of Plain Sight follows Los Angeles Times Reporter, Rosanna Xia, as she investigates University of California Santa Barbara scientist David Valentine’s discovery of corroded barrels on the seafloor off the coast of Southern California. Up to 500,000 barrels of toxic industrial waste were dumped after World War II. The film explores this hidden disaster by showing the effects of these toxic deposits on ecosystems and communities. It is a powerful exposé of overlooked environmental negligence, its consequences, and the fight to hold the responsible parties accountable. This film has a run time of 94 minutes. Our reflection speaker is the Out of Plain Sight filmmaker, Pulitzer prize finalist and LA Times investigative reporter, Rosanna Xia! We are thrilled to have Rosanna join us for what we know will be an insightful and fascinating conversation. Don’t miss this unique opportunity.
