The 2023 Environmental Film Series

The new year means it is time for the 2023 QC Environmental Film Series! Our 4th season begins Sunday, January 22 at 2 pm at the Figge Art Museum in Davenport with the showing of the documentary “ The Seeds of Vandana Shiva”. This documentary follows the life of present-day Gandhian eco-activist and agro-ecologist Vandana Shiva. Like Rachel Carson who spoke out against the use of chemical pesticides at the start of the Green Revolution, Vandana Shiva boldly speaks out against the use of GMOs (Genetically Modified) seeds. “Food is a weapon. When you sell real weapons you control armies. When you control food you control society, but when you control seed you control life on earth.” she states. Vandana Shiva warns that there will be the loss of seed diversity and resilience due to the large agri-businesses patenting of GMO seeds. Learn what has inspired and continues to motivate Vandana Shiva to bravely confront the agro–industrial giants. Watch historical accounts bearing the mark of devastation caused when the life-ways and natural systems are disrupted by the hubris actions of humans. And see how people around the world are returning to right their relationship with the earth.

After the movie there will be Reflection Speakers and a time for Q & A. Our speakers will be ethnobotanist and artist Moselle Singh who has worked at various biodiversity initiatives and organic farms around the world, including in India with Vandana Shiva. Moselle has also worked with our other speakers, Patti and George Naylor. The Naylors have been farming their family farm in Churdan, IA since 1976, choosing never to raise GMO crops.

The 2023 QC Environmental Film Series runs from Jan-March with a total of 6 documentaries addressing the environment and conservation. Admission is $5 unless otherwise noted as free.
