Black Hawk College finishes final phase of renovations

Black Hawk College is finishing up its final round of campus renovations and expansion. The $29 million Building 2 project is designed to emphasize career and technical education.

College president Jeremy Thomas says the building was designed around the community’s input. “We wanted to make sure as we were going through campus, it met our needs. So, we visited with local employers, we- we talked to our alumni, we talked to our students, we visited with our faculty,” says Thomas.

The building hosts welding, industrial and preventative maintenance, forensics, manufacturing, an e-sports lab, computer labs, and eight classrooms.

Thomas says this building will be able to serve many purposes. “Nothing was pigeon-holed to a particular program. that’s was really old school. That was something we did 30 years ago or 40 years ago. You’d spend tens of millions of dollars, and it was really a one-use type building. That’s not how this project worked. And so, more multi-use space was the theme,” says Thomas.

Updates to the fifty-year-old building are part of a long-term plan. The campus previously refurbished Building 3 in 2024 and Building 1 in 2019.

Renovations will wrap up next week.
