The City of Galesburg is receiving a $300,000 grant to help improve the homes of moderate to low-income renters.

The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) Community Development Block Grant Healthy Houses Program will replace HVAC systems in rental buildings with six or fewer units.

Director of Community Development Steve Gugliotta explains the grant's benefits. “So the grant itself would, as you replace these HVAC units, would help create a healthy, you know, more energy efficient environment for the resident.”

The funding is anticipated to update between 20 and 25 HVAC system rental units.

Galesburg has been strategically improving housing conditions since 2019. As of 2025, they have removed 74 rundown buildings, removed lead from 82 homes through a Housing of Urban Development grant, and fixed 92 homes with DCEO, Illinois Housing Development Authority, and the City of Galesburg Local Housing Repair Grant.

The city is currently taking applications for its Housing Repair Assistance Program and the DCEO CDBG Housing Rehabilitation Program.

The city will receive the HVAC grant within the next few weeks.
