Local homeless shelters are maintaining their facilities to keep all citizens warm this winter.
That includes Humility Homes and Services, which runs an emergency shelter in downtown Davenport. Chief Development Officer Megan Brown-Saldana says each night, there are roughly 550 unhoused individuals in the Quad Cities.
“Our regular 88-bed shelter has not been full," Brown-Saldana said. "There’s been one or two openings every night all winter, and that I’d like to say is a representation of being low-barrier and having housing-first initiatives.”
Brown-Saldana said over half of Quad Cities residents pay more than 30% on their rent or mortgage, stressing the issue of affordable housing. This, she said, is closely correlated with homelessness.
“In the month of December, we had over 140 Quadcitizens come through our outreach hours for showers and underwear, toothpaste," Brown-Saldana said. "That’s 140 of our neighbors.”
She said Humility Homes will be holding a hygiene drive this February. For more information, visit their website.
