The city of Dubuque is collecting Christmas trees following the holiday season.

Residents can set out trees under eight feet tall to be composted until January 17th. All trees must have a city-issued brush tie or yard waste sticker attached and visible.

Resource Management Supervisor Jake Jansen said the Merry Mulch tree collection program composts approximately 500 trees annually at the Dubuque Metropolitan Solid Waste Agency (DWASWA). Following pick-up, Jansen said citizens in return, receive free access to compost to use within their homes.

“And they can use it in their backyards for composting or for their gardens. So it’s kind of like a self-giving if you’re utilizing it," Jansen said. "You’re contributing to the compost pile, and it turns back a valuable product to use at your house.”

Jansen said stickers and ties are sold at most grocery stores in Dubuque and at City Hall for just over a dollar ($1.50).

All ornaments and decorations must be removed from the trees to ensure proper compost. Wreaths and garlands are not accepted.
