In partnership with the Illinois Green Alliance, the Illinois State Board of Education is accepting applications for the 2024 Illinois Green Ribbon Schools Award until 5 p.m. on Dec. 20.
Since 2011, the program has recognized schools for environmental education curriculum and sustainability efforts. Schools will be assessed on their collective contribution to offering pathways to green careers, improving the health and wellness of the school community and reducing costs and environmental impact.
Education Recognition Program Coordinator Talor Mourning said these initiatives deepen community relationships while saving funds and promoting STEM and outdoor education curriculums.
"Schools are uniquely positioned to model sustainable practices and inspire the next generation of our environmental leaders," Mourning said. "Teaching sustainability really equips students with the skills and the mindset to address global environmental challenges and can help prepare them for careers in STEM fields."
Applications will be reviewed by the Illinois Green Alliance, selecting candidates who best represent all three pillars of the award. Schools will then be selected by the State Board of Education as Illinois' 2024 Green Ribbon schools before being nominated to the U.S. Board of Education to represent the state's schools at a national level.
Along with the award, Mourning said the work of the schools goes beyond these recognitions.
"These programs prepare our students to be global leaders and future advocates in the field of sustainability... And really highlight civic values for our students, families and the greater community" Mourning said.
Applications can be submitted by schools at both the K-12 and higher education levels at the Illinois Green Alliance website.
