The Dubuque Metropolitan Area Solid Waste Agency (DMASWA) was awarded $4 million from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to expand battery recycling and make it more accessible to consumers.

The DOE granted a total of $11.5 million in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funds to promote recycling and reduce waste in state and local governments.

DMASWA will construct a battery recycling hub inside its future customer convenience center at the Dubuque Metro Landfill, with work set to begin in early 2025.

According to the release, approximately 25% of the facility will be dedicated to battery collection and processing. The batteries will then be shipped to metal extraction and recycled into new batteries.
