The John Deere Planetarium and Fryxell Geology Museum will be open to the public from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9 for Augustana College’s annual fall open house.
Professor and Planetarium Director Lee Carkner will host indoor and outdoor programs. The night’s events will include a planetarium show on the 30-foot dome, access to the Getz-Rogers Gallery and telescope observation opportunities.
“We’re going to hopefully, if the weather is clear, get a look at the craters and the mountains of the Moon,” Carkner said. “You can see the cloud bands on Jupiter, and you can see the rings of Saturn.”
The Fryxell Geology Museum will also be open for viewing, featuring fossils, fluorescent rocks and dinosaur casts and skeletons.
Faculty and students will be available to answer questions.
"We're always excited... It's always fun to share our love of science with the community, and also it gives the students a chance to show off some of the astronomy knowledge they've acquired when they're here at Augustana." Carkner said.
Outdoor programs and telescope viewings will be weather-dependent, with indoor events still offered.
