The Dubuque Multicultural Family Center (MFC) will welcome LaMetra Murdock as the center’s new director beginning Monday, Oct. 14.

The MFC is a non-profit that works to cultivate diversity, equity and inclusion within the city, working as a resource for community members.

City of Dubuque Office of Community Impact Director Antonio Mouzon previously held the position of MFC director, before taking on his new role in July. Mouzon said that Murdock's passions and philosophy align with the values of the MFC.

“I think that it is an extremely beautiful partnership between the city of Dubuque and a nonprofit organization,” Mouzon said “Our nonprofit is extremely diverse and dynamic, and they elevate the voices that reflect our community, and the work that we get to do at the MFC and the work that LaMetra gets to carry on is just so necessary in our community, and I'm just excited that she's apart of the team, going to be joining us. I'm glad to be working with her.”

As the director, Murdock will collaborate with the City of Dubuque and members of the MFC non-profit board and will be responsible for identifying the needs of community members, specifically engaging with issues of inequity related to cultural and circumstantial differences.

"We have to put in that work to make it more equitable, more diverse, more inclusive, and give everyone that sense of belonging,” Murdock said.

Murdock has served as the family self-sufficiency coordinator in the City of Dubuque Housing and Community Development Department since 2021, her second position with the city after first being hired as a housing financial specialist in the Community Development Department’s Lead and Healthy Homes Grant Program.

Prior to her work in Dubuque, Murdock has had experience engaging with communities and serving disadvantaged populations, including through her positions with Thresholds Bridge North, the City of Chicago Department of Human Services, Hillcrest Family Services and Prudential Financial.

Her lived experiences and previous work have continued Murdock’s passion for serving her community members.

"Just because I'm a director now, I don't want to seem like I'm too far away from the people and their needs," Murdock said. "I still want to be in the fight, I still want to be very active in helping people reach their goals, whatever they are."
