Thanks to a national charity, the Galesburg Police Department's K9 officer is well-protected. Zeus now wears a bullet and stab protective vest, donated by the group Vested Interest in K9s.

And it was sponsored by Nancy Pyron of Huson, Montana, and embroidered with the phrase, “Born to Love-Trained to Serve-Loyal Always.”

Vested Interest in K9s was established in 2009 to help supply body armor for police dogs. And so far it's provided over 3,800 custom-fitted, protective vests through private and corporate donations, at a value of 6.9 million dollars.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
