Fire at SouthPark Mall

SouthPark Mall
a section of SouthPark Mall - the fire broke out in The Fig Tree

Following Monday morning's fire, SouthPark Mall was scheduled to re-open late in the afternoon.

Moline Fire Marshall Jerry Spiegel says the call came in at 10:45 am, for a fire in The Fig Tree book store. It's located between Von Maur and the former Younkers store.

"The Shoe Department across the hallway saw the flames - his gate to the store was down and locked - and they called it in when they saw it. And by that time, the sprinkler heads had popped and pretty much contained the fire."

Firefighters finished putting out the fire, then mall staff began cleaning up water and venting the smoke from the building.

Spiegel says the owner of the book store lit some incense just inside the main door about 9 am, and then left for about an hour and-a-half, until someone else called 911. And he calls this a perfect example of why you should never leave candles, incense, or any open flame un-attended.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
