Iowa Federation of Labor Honors Victims of Unsafe Workplaces

Iowa Federation of Labor

People who've lost their lives on the job will be remembered across Iowa this weekend.

The Iowa Federation of Labor will host several events for Workers' Memorial Day to honor the victims of unsafe working conditions. Last year, at least 26 people died due to on-the-job injuries in Iowa alone.

Ken Sagar is the president of the Iowa Federation of Labor and says this is a bigger issue than what some people may think of as just "dangerous" jobs.

"Workplace safety is something everyone needs to consider. It's not simply constuction workers, or power line workers, or people you might consider blue collar positions," said Sagar. "I know we all have to work for a living, but dying to earn a living isn't a part of something that we should all condone."

The official date for Workers' Memorial Day is April 28th, which Sagar says is the day that President Richard Nixon signed OSHA workplace protections into effect in 1970.

Some of the Worker's Memorial Day events will be held in Bettendorf and Iowa City Friday, April 26th, and Clinton on Sunday, April 28th.
