Muscatine has been attacked. The city says its computer system is the victim of a ransomware attack that was discovered early Wednesday morning.
Specifics have not been released by the city, but a ransomware attack usually means someone has uploaded some malicious software that blocks access to a computer system until money, or ransom, is paid.
City staff and other I-T personnel have been working to restore the system since then. Meanwhile Muscatine police and the FBI are investigating the cyber attack.
A spokesman says most city services outside of City Hall are working, but some of the functions housed at city hall are unavailable: "Our IT personnel are making headway restoring City Hall servers and workstations but it is a slow process."
