Demolition and Development Planned for Moline's River Drive

Submitted by Barb Sandberg
Train depot on River Drive

A group trying to stop the destruction of a historic landmark in Moline has two more months to salvage what they can. Tonight, the city council will consider selling the 115-year-old train depot on River Drive to the Illinois Department of Transportation, with a deadline of February 1st.

Barb Sandberg, from the Moline Historic Preservation Commission, says the group may have enough time to save historical features of the depot, which has to be moved for the new I-74 bridge.
The city council will discuss the sale two more times, and it'll be demolished in the spring.

Tonight, aldermen will also consider buying the old Spiegel Moving & Storage building next door, on 20th Street.

Sandberg is perplexed.

Moline plans to buy the four-story Spiegel building for over $300,000, to be redeveloped for residential or commercial space. Once the new I-74 bridge is finished, the building will be just east of the River Drive off-ramp.
