Telephone Scam in Galesburg

Ameren Illinois

Police are warning residents in Galesburg to be careful when answering their phones. Galesburg Police issued a statement today saying there have been reports of a telephone scam operating in the area.
In these calls, a male caller claims to be a representative from Ameren Illinois. He has warned residents that their power will shut off in two hours unless an immediate payment is made. The caller then directs the victim to use a prepaid debit card to make the payment.
In past calls, the payment has ranged from 500 to 2,000 dollars.
Ameren Illinois is reminding customers they do not demand immediate payments. People who receive this type of call should hang up.
