Charges Filed for Infant Death

Four months after a child died, his grandmother has been arrested, but she's not suspected of inflicting the fatal injuries. Instead, it's believed another child is responsible for the death of 4 month old Darien Watkins last March.

This morning, Rock Island County Sheriff Gerry Bustos announced the arrest of 78 year old Beverly James, and she's charged with endangering the life and health of a child. She ran a licensed day care center in Moline, and one of the other children is thought to have caused the bite marks, broken ribs, and head injuries suffered by Watkins.
The second child is less than five years old.
James faces the felony charge of child endangerment for not supervising the children in her care.

Adults have to supervise the children in their care.

Sheriff Bustos says a variety of evidence points to the second child, including blood on his clothes, dna, and fingerprints on a metal bar.

And in his 30 years in law enforcement, he says he's never seen a case like this.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
