Carrie Olson was killed for her car and her money. That's according to Rock Island County State's Attorney John McGehee, during his closing argument today, at the murder trial of Timothy McVay.
After listing the many lies and half-truths, he says McVay told police, McGehee said McVay killed his former girlfriend because she wouldn't drive him to Minnesota to meet his current girlfriend.
"He needed her car, he needed her money to get to Minnesota. Tim McVay was not going to be denied by anybody, including Carrie Olson for his New Year's trip. He was broke, he didn't own a car, he was suspended, and had not other way to get to Minnesota that early morning of December 29."
29 year old Carrie Olson of Davenport was last seen in late December 2013, and her body was found the following April near Hastings, Minnesota.
Defense attorney Dan Dalton focused on the lack of direct proof, saying the prosecution case was "only speculation."
"They want you to believe that a 215 pound man with his bare hands, killed a 194 pound woman. And he did so without leaving any medical evidence, any physical evidence, any sort of injury of any kind."
The prosecution believes Olson died from asphyxiation, but the medical examiner could only conclude "homicide by unspecified means."
McVay did not testify in his defense, and presented no other witnesses.
Following closing arguments, Judge Michael Meersman said he will announce a verdict either Friday afternoon or Monday morning.
