Davenport Considers City-Wide Fiber Optic Network

SiFi Networks

Davenport residents could soon have access to faster internet, everywhere in the city. Wednesday night, the City Council will discuss plans for a city-wide fiber optic network, that would connect all residents and businesses.
Davenport's Chief Information Officer, Rob Henry, says the network would be an extension of the current fiber system, which connects 36 facilities, including government buildings and 9-1-1 centers.
He says a city-wide network would fill the gaps where internet is slow or not available.

So far, Davenport has paid for a feasibility study to determine the current need for high-speed broadband services. Next, Henry says it'll try to partner with other internet providers. Eleven providers have responded, with varying degrees of interest and capabilites. At Wednesday's meeting, the City Council will consider working with SiFi Networks, as a first step toward a long-term contract.

If the next planning stages are approved, Henry says Davenport could start building the fiber optic network by next spring.
