The Scott County Democratic Party selected their nominee to represent District 89 in the Iowa House of Representatives.

Monica Kurth will be the democratic nominee in a special election to replace Jim Lykam in the House. Lykam was elected to the Iowa Senate last month.

Kurth says she is honored to be the party's nominee.

"I will be a strong advocate for working families in Davenport who are working hard everyday to make ends meet," Kurth said in a press release. "We need to raise wages for families in Scott County, ensure our kids get a great education and make sure our seniors have the retirement they deserve."

Kurth is a longtime Davenport resident who served as an instructor and counselor at Scott Community College for more than 20 years, according to the press release. She's a member of Interfaith, a coalition of community groups and congregations that address issues like education funding and access to health care.

Governor Branstad has not set a date yet for the special election. Republicans will hold a nominating convention to select their candidate Thursday, January 12.
