An Iowa organization wants to bring family law reform into the forefront of the 2016 election. Saturday, the Families United Action Network will hold a town hall forum in Clinton, so local candidates can talk about issues affecting Iowa families.
President Nicholas Dreeszen says one of the main topics will be how child custody is handled in Iowa after parents divorce. Iowa State Representative, Norlin Mommsen, will talk about his proposed bill, that would require judges to award joint legal custody, unless there's evidence of abuse.
Dreeszen says it's especially difficult for men to win custody, or even visitation rights with their children, under current state law.
Another topic at Saturday's town hall forum will be child sex trafficking.
Dreeszen says candidates for congress, state representatives, and state senators will participate in the Iowa Family Preservation Town Hall Forum. It begins at 1:30 pm Saturday, at Jenny's Diner in Clinton (517 N 2nd St).
The Families United Action Network is based in Des Moines and was founded last year.
