Hix to step down from Galesburg city council

Bradley Hix will step down as the Ward 1 representative on the Galesburg city council because he is moving outside the city limits.

"So normally my comments are a little short. This one might be a little longer since it's my last meeting," Hix said at the end of Monday night's council meeting.

Hix, a local real estate agent, was first elected to the seat in 2019 and won a second term in 2023. He thanked city staff for their work and addressed past and present council members and mayors he served with.

"I know that your hearts are all in the right place. You know, we have different philosophies. We have different ways of going about things," Hix said. "But I've never once questioned that everybody that's sitting up here now and that sat up here had the best interests for the city."

Mayor Peter Schwartzman said Hix's announcement took him by surprise. He thanked Hix for his six years on the council, noting Hix's work to improve the city's Harrel W. Timmons Municipal Airport.

Schwartzman will nominate a candidate to fill the seat. The city council must approve the nomination.

This will be the third time in four years that Schwartzman has nominated someone to fill a council seat.

In 2021, he nominated Jaclyn Smith-Esters to fill his Ward 5 seat after he was elected to a first term as mayor. Later that year, he nominated Kevin Wallace to serve in Ward 3 after Lindsay Hillery stepped down.
