Help in Clinton for Storm Victims

The mobile community resource center in Clinton will continue to help residents and businesses hurt by last week's storm, at least through Tuesday, and possibly longer.

Mayor Scott Maddasion says following the derecho, the site started out small, in a city park, just providing ice for people to preserve food. Then over the weekend, food donations started coming in - first just pizzas, then produce, milk, and meat were handed out Monday.

And one of the most important services it's offered for people without power is charging stations.

"There are so many things that are run off technology now, dialysis machines and different medical devices. We had some folks down there charging those types of devices so that they could take them home and use them when needed."

The resource center in Clinton is a collaboration of the city and county, plus Mercy One hospital, and Information Referral Assistance Services.

Mayor Maddasion hopes the response to last week's storm will help them respond to severe weather in the future.

"I think some times in Iowa we feel like we're not as prone to some of these hurricane type winds because we're in the midwest, but they came through and I definitely want to put this on our radar so that we continue to have a plan in place."

He says the help site will be open Tuesday, and possibly Wednesday, if large numbers of people in the Clinton area still need help recovering from the storm.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
