The City of Rock Island may soon ban the retail sale of cats and dogs. On Monday night, aldermen were set to vote on a new ordinance that also updates the city's rules about ownership of canine and feline companions.
Miles Brainard, Rock Island's Planning and Redevelopment Administrator, says a group of people approached the city about changing laws to protect cats and dogs from the inhumane conditions found in puppy mills by not allowing stores to sell them within city limits.
Under the new cat and dog ordinance, retailers in Rock Island will be able to facilitate adoptions from animals shelters and rescue organizations. National retailers, such as PetCo and Pet Smart, already follow similar rules. Brainard says he doesn't think any stores in Rock Island currently sell dogs and cats. https://bailingoutbenji.com/puppy-mill-maps/
