Public Meeting for Bettendorf Budget

A stable tax rate and lots of capital projects are key features of next year's budget for Bettendorf. Wednesday night, city officials will hold their annual public information meeting on the budget, ahead of next week's final approval.

Finance Director Jason Schadt says the proposed budget totals 97.7 million dollars, and is an increase over this year of nearly 2 per cent. But it keeps the property tax rate at 12-dollars and 50-cents per 1,000 dollars taxable value.

"We really are fortunate to be able to live off the growth of the city, year over year, that's really the economic driver for Bettendorf. We like to keep our feet on the gas and keep growth moving forward so that we can keep the tax rates low for everybody."

And next year (fiscal 2019-2020) would be the third year in a row for the 12-50 tax rate.

Schadt says perhaps the biggest road project in next year's budget will be more work on Hopewell Avenue that serves the northeast part of Bettendorf where a lot of new homes and businesses are being built.

Iowa requires local governments to submit their budgets by March 15th each year, for the fiscal years that begin on July lst.

Wednesday night's public budget meeting begins at 6:30 in city hall.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
