Davenport Gets Ready for Mississippi River Flooding

Davenport is preparing for high water along its long riverfront. People can pick up sandbags at the public works building located at 232 South Marquette Street.

Davenport employees have already closed South Concord Street between Utah and River Drive. Parts of Wapello and Miller avenues will also be closed between Railroad Avenue and South Concord.

Over the weekend, sections of Beiderbecke Drive will be blocked as the Mississippi River rises. On Friday, the riverfront bike path will be closed between Credit Island and Marquette Street. Other sections will be closed Saturday or Sunday as flood water reaches them.

The river will also affect LeClaire Park over the weekend.

A Davenport spokesman also says an event called, "Rev it Up for Awareness" will be moved to Centennial Park on Friday and Saturday. And Saturday's "Twisted Cat Outdoor Fish Tournament" will be held at Marquette Landing.

Davenport is also reminding people Modern Woodmen Park, the River’s Edge, the Freight House, and Union Station will all be open for business as usual.

And remember it's best to avoid flood water for a variety of reasons, such as strong currents plus the risk of drowning or getting an infection.

Davenport's flood information page is HERE. The Quad Cities National Weather Service page for Rock Island, Lock and Dam 15 water levels is HERE. The Corps of Engineers provides river level readings HERE. And the Iowa Flood Center's alert page is HERE
