Rock Island County Back Online

Rock Island County is back online after a malfunction by some old equipment took down its website.

Information Systems Director, Kurt Davis, says the main computer server crashed at midday on Wednesday, but he and his staff had the data transferred and working again by early Thursday night.

The main server is 10 years old and was due to be replaced this year. But because of  the county's money problems, replacement has been postponed until next year or later.

"It didn't really impact the employees - it mainly impacted the public. The public could not get to tax assessments, tax collections, and election information that's on our site. The county employees probably had to field a lot of phone calls."

Davis says their disaster recovery plan worked well, and he had a temporary website ready to use for next week's election in case it was needed.

Data from the 10 year old server has been moved to servers that are "only" 6 years old but he had hoped to replace them this year as well.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
