Possible Cost of RI County Justice Center Addition

WVIK Staff

The Rock Island County board has taken the next step in its efforts to build an annex to the justice center and courthouse. Tuesday night, it voted to spend no more than 28 million dollars on the project.

Board chair, Ken Maranda, says that's the maximum amount the county will borrow if the board decides to build the annex.
The vote in favor was 22 to 2.

Maranda says the board will hold a public hearing on the project at its February meeting (2/16), but between now and then the county will continue working with bond attorneys on how to finance the project.

For several years, county leaders have been trying to figure out how to replace the aging courthouse, and meet modern standards for courtrooms and other facilities.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
