Service Clubs Nominate Women for Iowa Legislature
More women should run for office in Iowa. That's the message from a non-profit, which is asking local service clubs to help identify candidates. 50-50 in 2020 says it's a bi-partisan group that wants half the members of the Iowa Legislature to consist of women within the next five years.
Executive Director Mary Miller says 53 percent of Iowa's population is female, but only 23 percent of legislators are women.
Miller says organizations should also encourage women who already serve on city councils, school boards, and local commissions to run.
Once service clubs nominate women, those who are interested can tour the Iowa Legislature while it's in session.
Members of 50-50 in 2020 will also give presentations to women who might run for office. The organization will hold its bi-annual, two-day campaign training school in January for women running for the legislature or higher office.
50-50 in 2020 has 34 members across Iowa and works with women from all political parties.
