Demolition of a vacant building on the Davenport riverfront is finally underway. Crews began knocking down the former Dock restaurant and American Legion hall this week.
Asbestos removal began in August, and was recently completed. City officials says demolition could take about one month, and will cost 71,000 dollars.
The restaurant endured many floods over the years, but finally closed for good after a fire in 2003. The city bought the property the following year. Numerous efforts to sell the building failed, and this summer a proposal to build a 3-story office building and restaurant on the site failed when the developer could not get financing.
