A lawyer in Galesburg who specializes in criminal defense, wants to move to the "other side." Today Jeremy Karlin announced his candidacy for Knox County State's Attorney.
After graduating from law school 20 years ago, Karlin was hired as an assistant state's attorney for Knox County, and worked in the office for 2 years. Then went into private practice.
He believes the state's attorney must do more than focus on prosecuting criminals.
And that would involve working with schools, churches, business, law enforcement, and other local agencies to develop better strategies for preventing crime.
While running for re-election to the Galesburg city council, Karlin says he learned from his constituents how concerned they are about crime. And that's when he began thinking a new approach is needed.
If a primary is needed, it will be held next March (2016), followed by the general election the following November (2016).
The current Knox County State's Attorney is John Pepmeyer, now serving his second term. He has not announced his plans for next year.
