New Leader for Army Corps' RI District

Army Corps of Engineers

The Rock Island District of the Army Corps of Engineers has a new leader. Today at a change of command ceremony on Arsenal Island, Colonel Craig Baumgartner became the 48th commander, taking over from Colonel Mark Deschenes who led the district for 3 years.

Baumgartner has served in the Army for 22 years, and comes to the Rock Island District after serving as the Command Engineer of the U.S. Army Cyber and Second Army.

The Army Corps' Rock Island District covers 78,000 square miles in parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri. With nearly 900 employees, it carries out a variety of missions including maintaining river navigation, flood risk management, ecosystem restoration, emergency management, and regulatory functions.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
