Heating Plant Upgrade on Arsenal Island

Rock Island Arsenal Garrison

By the end of next year, the coal-fired heating plant on Arsenal Island will be replaced by dozens of smaller, more efficient natural gas boilers. On Monday the Garrison announced a 22.4 million dollar joint project with Honeywell.

Honeywell senior energy consultant, John Bethea, says the upgrade will help the Army save money, and meet next year's deadline under the Clean Air Act to reduce air pollution.
And even better, it'll cost the Army nothing upfront - instead the savings in energy costs will be paid to Honeywell for the next 15 years.

Natural gas boilers will be installed this year in some of the buildings on the island, with the rest next year.
Bethea says the alternative was to install expensive pollution control equipment on the already old and in-efficient coal-fired heating plant.
