Davenport School Could Become Apartments

City of Davenport

A former school in Davenport might be turned into apartments for seniors. Wednesday night the city council will consider a proposal to re-zone the vacant Buchanan School on West 6th Street.

Quad Cities developer, Chris Ales, has a 5.4 million dollar plan for the 110 year old building - first he needs the city to re-zone the 1.3 acre property, then he needs the Iowa Department of Economic Development to approve funding with federal money set aside for new housing projects.

If approved the old school would be converted into 18 apartments.
Davenport's Plan and Zoning Commission unanimously approved the request.
Buchanan School opened in 1904, and closed in 1940. It's had at least a couple of owners since then, including the US Navy which used it as a training center for about 25 years.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
