Second Crest Coming

After falling for several days, the Mississippi River is rising again in the Quad Cities. And a second crest following heavy rain in recent weeks, is expected on Monday. The National Weather Service says the river today is 1.3 feet over flood stage, and expected to reach 1.8 feet over, by Monday.

At that level, water affects Credit Island and the 4700 block of River Drive in Moline. Water is at the base of the flood wall gates at the downtown Rock Island riverfront, and it's reached the sidewalks along the river at Le Claire Park in Davenport.

The Mississippi is expected to rise half a foot at Muscatine and crest on Tuesday at 3 feet over flood stage. Downstream at Burlington, the river level will continue to fall from its current level of 4 1/2 feet over flood stage.

The Rock River is falling but still over flood stage at both Joslin and Moline. It should reach flood stage by late next week.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
