Electronic Re-use Program Begins

After ten years of recycling old electronics, the Waste Commission of Scott County is now in the business of re-selling old electronics. In January, it began re-furbishing laptops, hard drives, and flat-screen monitors, and selling them on Ebay.

Spokeswoman Brandy Welvaert says when these materials are dropped off, the commission puts aside those that might still have some useful life left.
Welvaert says a key part of the re-use program is data security.

In addition, an outside third party evaluates this process on a regular basis.

For safety and security reasons, all transactions are being done online, in the Waste Commission's Ebay store. No shopping or viewing is allowed at the de-manufacturing facility in north Davenport.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
