Palmer College Unveils New Statue

Zach Wilson, WVIK News

Palmer College of Chiropractic has started a new tradition for its students and faculty.

On Wednesday, the college in Davenport unveiled an "interactive" statue of the founder of chiropractic, D.D. Palmer, in which people can lie down on a bench and pretend that Palmer is giving them an adjustment. The college expects a lot of people will want to have their picture taken with this new statue.

His great-granddaughter, Vickie Anne Palmer, spoke at the unveiling ceremony.

"My great-grandfather changed the face of health care and founded the chiropractic profession with the very first adjustment. His belief in and commitment to spinal health, laid the foundation for generations of chiropractors dedicated to the health and well-being of others."

The statue of D.D. Palmer was designed by Gino Tassara of Inspired Artisans, an art studio located in Milwaukee. It was paid for with a $100,000 gift from Juanita Thompson, the widow of a Palmer College graduate, Homer Thompson.

A historical marker in downtown Davenport says Palmer performed the first adjustment in 1895.
