Augustana Remembers John Kindschuh

Wheelan Pressley

A longtime member of the administration at Augustana College has died. John Kindschuh was 92 years old, and passed away last Friday.

Kindschuh served the college for 36 years, and was involved in a variety of major projects including the Carver PE Center, Tredway Library, PepsiCo Center, Hanson Hall of Science and Olin Center. He retired in 1999.

A graduate of the Augustana Seminary, he left a pastorate in Burlington, Iowa, in 1963 to become an assistant to then-President C.W. Sorensen for church relations, while also supporting admissions and fund-raising. After securing a $1.5 million gift from Roy J. Carver that would fund the completion of the Carver Center, Kindschuh was promoted to vice president for administration.

Funeral services will be held at 10 am on Wednesday, February 27th, at First Lutheran Church, in Moline (1230 5th Avenue). The Wheelan-Pressley Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Augustana College, or to First Lutheran Church in Moline.

At various times, Kindschuh's responsibilities included overseeing WVIK, and he was a strong supporter of the station.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
